How Oral Cancer Screening at New Age Dental Can Help?

Your regular dental check-ups here at New Dental include screenings for oral cancer. These screenings are quick, gentle and non-invasive but are vital for protecting your general health.

Dentists are specially trained to detect any signs of oral cancer through closely examining the soft tissues inside your mouth including your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, and your tongue. When examining these tissues, we look for any changes to the colour or texture, and our dentist will check for any unexplained lumps, bumps or sore patches that are failing to heal. As part of your examination, we will very gently feel the lymph glands in your neck to assess if they are abnormally enlarged.

If we do find anything even slightly amiss, our dentist might take a small sample of cells for further analysis or we can refer you to the appropriate specialist. It is unlikely we will find anything wrong but unfortunately, oral cancer is becoming more common and an early diagnosis greatly improves the long-term prognosis. It is particularly important to have regular screenings if you have a family history of cancer, if you smoke or drink or have been exposed to the human papilloma virus.
