Often a bone graft is needed in preparation for dental implants. This is a very straightforward procedure that helps to ensure there is sufficient bone to support the implant posts. A sinus graft is a specialised type of bone graft that may be required when replacing the upper back teeth with dental implants.
Your sinuses are located just above your upper back teeth and are air filled cavities. They are separated from your jawbone by a thin membrane. The bone in this area tends to be thinner compared to other parts of your jawbone and it often needs to be built up in preparation for dental implants.
Our dentist will need to make a tiny incision in your gums to expose the underlying bone. They will then make a small opening in the bone to expose the membrane separating the bone and your sinus cavities. This membrane is then gently ‘lifted’ upwards, creating space for your bone graft which will be carefully packed into this area. Afterwards the bone graft is left to heal for several months, until it is strong enough to support your new implant.
