When your child’s adult back teeth emerge, we are likely to suggest protecting these molars with fissure sealants that will cover the chewing surfaces. These surfaces are particularly prone to developing cavities due to their design. They have many small fissures and grooves that help to grind up food, but which can easily trap food and bacteria. Sealing these surfaces will prevent this from happening.
Fissure sealants are made from flowable plastic that can be painted onto the tooth surfaces where it will quickly harden. This creates a smooth, sealed and easy-to-clean surface that should remain cavity-free.
Sometimes this treatment may be useful for protecting a child’s milk teeth, if they are at a higher risk of tooth decay. This may be the case if the grooves in these teeth are particularly deep. Sealing them could help keep them strong and cavity-free until they are ready to be shed naturally.
