Your back teeth or molars are especially designed to help grind up food with lots of intricate grooves and fissures on their chewing surfaces. These grooves can be quite deep and difficult to keep clean, which is why your molars are more prone towards developing cavities. Fissure sealants are a good, non-invasive way to protect these surfaces, preventing tooth decay.
Fissure sealants are made from a very thin layer of flowable plastic that can get into it all the grooves in your teeth, completely sealing them. This sealant is painted onto clean tooth surfaces and it quickly hardens, creating a virtually invisible layer of plastic. The layer is thin enough not to interfere with your bite and it should last for several years before it needs replacing. We frequently use this treatment to protect children’s newly erupted adult molars, but adults with cavity-free teeth may be able to benefit from this preventative treatment.
