If you have a child who is eligible for Medicare, they can receive dental care through public dental services. However, some kids may qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)if their family also qualifies for Family Tax Benefit Part A, or if they receive a specific payment from the Australian government. This gives eligible children from age 2 and up to age 17 access to $1000 covering a range of dental services provided over two calendar years.
How Do I Know If My Child Is Eligible?
If your child qualifies for the CDBS, there is no need to do anything as Medicare will notify you directly. You can also check to see if your child qualifies and can see their CDBS balance by checking your online Medicare account or by phoning them directly.
What Services Are Provided by the Scheme?
The scheme covers essential dental services designed to keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy. Preventative dentistry services include dental examinations and cleanings, fissure sealants and diagnostic dental x-rays. It also covers some restorative services including dental fillings and root canal treatments, and tooth extractions. Your child cannot use the scheme for any cosmetic or orthodontic dental work. These benefits won’t cover the cost of any services needed in a hospital environment.
